Sweet popcorn. There are countless variations of this wonderful, crunchy delight. Here on the blog we have the famous Pipoca Doce de Pipoqueiro (Walking Cart that sells popcorn on the streets), that red popcorn that can be heard from afar.

Today's is a recipe for sweet caramel popcorn, with a little brown sugar just to give it this nice color.

Since it's caramelized, the popcorn will stick together and it gets harder to mix if you use a regular pan, but we can handle it, right?

I give you two tips:

Choose a large skillet, preferably a saucepan (the one with two handles) and with a stiffer lid. Grasp the handles with the help of a tea towel, passing the cloth over the lid and shaking the pan several times during preparation. If you stop for several seconds, the sugar will burn.

Another tip for those without a popcorn machine is to pop the popcorn normally, make the caramel separately and then mix the two. The result is not the same, but it also works very well.

The use of brown sugar is optional, it was only used to give this darker color. It also burns much faster than refined sugar, so care and attention is needed. Nothing to leave the heat on high to go faster or stop stirring.

I recommend not thinking about making this recipe in the electric popcorn machine huh. Sugar reaches a very high temperature and would surely melt your device.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup of popcorn
  • 1/4 cup of refined sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of brown sugar (optional)
  • 1/4 cup of water
  • 1 tablespoon of oil
  • 1 pinch of salt

Method

Step 1

In a skillet, preferably a popcorn pot, mix the ingredients.

Step 2

Bring to low heat, stirring occasionally, until it starts to pop.

Step 3

Cover the pan and stirring often, always over low heat, wait for it to pop until the interval between one blast and the next is about 1 or 2 seconds.

Step 4

Turn off, place the popcorn on a baking sheet and spread them out so that the caramel is fresh, crunchy and the popcorn is melted.
